IERC Melbourne Forum on Innovations in International Education

Keynote address: ‘Internationalisation through Innovative Assessment Design’

Wednesday, 23rd November 2011 at CQUniversity Melbourne

4.00pm – 6.00pm

Chris ZgurasKeynote speaker: Associate Professor Christopher Ziguras is Deputy Dean (Learning & Teaching, International) in the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning at RMIT. His research explores various aspects of the political economy of international education, and he has written widely on the growth and the cross-border delivery of tertiary education, international education policy, and the impact of trade agreements on education services. His books include: The International Publishing Services Market co-edited with Bill Cope (Common Ground 2002); Self-Care: Embodiment, Personal Autonomy and the Shaping of Health Consciousness (Routledge 2004); and Transnational Education: Current Issues and Future Trends in Offshore Higher Education with Grant McBurnie (Routledge 2007).

Abstract: This address will consider strategies to overcome some of the practical challenges that face educators seeking to internationalise the higher education curriculum and enhance interaction between students from diverse backgrounds. The presentation will draw on the ‘interaction for learning’ framework developed by the recent ALTC project, Finding Common Ground. To illustrate, two case studies will be presented, each of which uses the diversity of the student group as a means to enhance learning in collaborative activities that address international topics.

CQUniversity International Education Research Centre staff will share brief project descriptions of current research which seeks to stimulate and evaluate new approaches to internationalisation of the learning experience and there will be an opportunity for Q & A.

This is an open Forum and all are welcome to attend. Refreshments served from 4.00pm (speeches start 4:20pm) and also following the Forum.
